It’s now 400 years ago – get ready to time travel and think about what life was like back then.................................................................

Here we go!  Are your brains and pencils ready?

BRAINSTORMING:

The whole class will brainstorm reasons why
the colonists left England, what they think the trip was like on the ship during the voyage to Jamestown.  How did Jamestown, Virginia meet or not meet the colonist's expectations.

Click here for England, Ship Voyage and Jamestown brainstorming graphic organizers.

RECORDING and ORGANIZATION:

Post the questions and ideas from the brainstorming on a large piece of mural paper that has been divided into 3 sections -- one for ENGLAND, SHIP VOYAGE and JAMESTOWN, and then divide the class into three groups to
match the sections on the mural.

Each group will need to have a laptop and a student as a:

Recorder – student who writes down answers to research questions on a data log.  Click here for a group data log that you can print.

Question Reviewer – student who reviews what has been recorded, making sure answers are complete.

Typist – student who types up the answers
from the data log in Word, saves and prints the answers.

Mural designer – student that posts the research in the appropriate section.

Time Keeper – student that keeps the group moving at a good pace.

Click here for a group jobs log you can print to remind you as you work, and assign each person to the job they will be doing.

                                Now YOU become the expert!!

After each group has completed it's research and posted the information on the appropriate
section of the mural organizer you will be divided into new groups.

Groups will have 3 members and each person will have worked on a different section of the mural organizer.  We call this type of grouping ---- jigsawing.  You have one person that is the expert from each of the main areas and each person puts their information together with the other group members, like you would put together a jigsaw puzzle!

YOU are the expert for the section that you researched, and you and your groupmates will
share information and learn about the other sections of the trip to Jamestown.

Pick a Recorder to write down your group's important ideas in sequential order before you start creating your child.

You get to bring your child to life!!

Here are some 'Think About' Questions
:

Is your group's child going to be a boy or a girl?

Do you have a name for your child?  You can check these two websites for
                ideas:         17th Century Girls Names

                                  17th Century Boys Names

Are you giving them a first, middle and last name?

How old is your child going to be?
What year were they born?

Did your child dress the way you do?  Why do you think they dressed the way they did?

What kind of things were important for children to have, wear and use on their voyage?

Are there other things your group thinks would be wonderful
details to know about your child?  Be sure to include them so we will really understand the life your child was experiencing.

Jot down your ideas and add them as you go through writing the diary.  YOU are creating this person --- so be sure to pull out all the stops and make your child come to life!

After your group of 3 gets organized using the think about questions above, you need to work together and begin writing the diary entries.

When that is completed then one person can begin typing the diary into Word, and the other two can trace one person and get started on dressing their child.

Be sure that your group of 3 work very closely together during this time and you check in with each other through the entire process.

Soon you will be sharing all of this information with the rest of your class!
